On 20th August 2006, aged 38, I took my average road bike to a 25 mile time-trial, with a sole aerodynamic accoutrement, namely, clip-on aerobars. No skinsuit, no pointy hat, no aero wheels, no overshoes. I had trained for it, and had set myself a target of under the hour, the reward for which would be the purchase of a new TT bike and the serious pursuit of the sport. Oh, and I didn’t know it then, but the further prize of many years of pain, suffering and misery, with a smattering of elation every time the black and white checkerboard slides by. I recorded 59:43. Expensive purchase to follow.

Since that event, driven by the obsession to be as fast as I can be, I have tried many ways to go faster. Some have worked, and at least as many have not. As a result, of the ones that did work, I won the prestigious British Best AllRounder (BBAR) national championship in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.  In my fourth win I set the fastest average speed in history for the competition. 2015 Highlights:

  • Fourth successive BBAR (British Best AllRounder) win,  fastest average speed in history across the three distances, 50 miles, 100 miles and 12 hours, of 28.774 mph, beating previous record of 28.26 mph.
  • 03 April, won High Wycombe CC open 10 mile time-trial by 28 seconds, in a time of 19:16, against a substantially stronger field than last year.
  • 05 April, won CC Weymouth  oipen10 mile time-trial by 24 seconds, in a time of 20:13, again against a substantially stronger field than last year.
  • 10 May, won Charlotteville CC open 50 mile time-trial by 1:41, in a time of 1:42:18.
  • 24 May, won Hounslow and District Wheelers open 100 time-trial, by over 12 minutes, in a time of 3:34:01, a new course record, knocking almost 4 minutes off my old course record. Race won 5 years in a row, which is also a record.
  • 05 July, 2nd (again) in National 100 mile time-trial championships. 15 seconds behind the winner.  Agegroup chaampion.
  • 18 July, won Shaftesbury CC open 50 mile time-trial by almost 3 minutes, in a time of 1:39:30.
  • 02 August, 6th in National 25 mile time-trial championships. Agegroup chaampion.
  • 16 August, won ECCA 12 Hour open time-trial, with a distance of 313.87 miles, 3rd fastest (the two faster rides were on significantly faster courses) on all time fastest riders list, a new course record by around 15 miles, and only 3.6 miles of the national record set on the fastest course in the country.  Also a national age record.
  • 05 September, 2nd in BDCA open 100 mile time-trial in a time of 3:22:40, 2nd fastest 100 on the all time list and a national age record.
  • 13 September, won YCF open 50 mile time-trial in a time of 1:38:10, a national age record and a new course record by almost 2 minutes.
  • 13 September, won CC Breckland open 50 mile time-trial in a time of 1:40:08, a new course record by almost 3 minutes.

  • 5 April, won VTTA Yorkshire 10 mile time-trial in 19:30.
  • 18 April, won High Wycombe CC open 10 mile time-trial by 52 seconds, in a time of 19:19.
  • 19 April, won CC Weymouth open 10 mile time-trial by 54 seconds, in a time of 20:03, new course record, breaking the 15-year old record of 20:17 set by Matt Illingworth when he won the National 10 Mile Championship on the course in 1999.
  • 7 May, won VTTA London and Home Counties 10 mile time-trial in a time of 19:18, 35 seconds clear of second place.
  • 11 May, won Wessex RC open 50 mile time-trial by over 5 minutes.
  • 18 May, won High Wycombe CC 25 mile open time-trial in a new course record time of 48:47.
  • 25 May, won Hounslow & District Wheelers open 100 mile time-trial for 4th consecutive year, in a time of 3:40:05.
  • 01 June, won Icknield RC open 100 mile time-trial by over 7 minutes, in a new course record time of 3:28:31.  Fourth fastest 100 mile rider on the all time fastest riders list.
  • 08 June, 3rd in National 50 mile time-trial championships.  Agegroup champion.
  • 15 June, won Newbury RC open 12Hour time-trial with a distance of 298.13 miles.
  • 28 June, 2nd in BDCA open 50 mile time-trial in a time of 1:38:27.  Only 4 other riders have ever gone faster over 50 miles.
  • 13 July, 2nd in National 100 mile time-trial championships. Agegroup champion.
  • 06 September, won BDCA open 100 mile time-trial in 3:26:44, moving me to 3rd fastest on the all time fastest riders list for the distance.
  • 27 September, won Manchester Wheelers open 50 mile time-trial in 1:37:19, a new course record and returning to 4th fastest on the all time fastest riders list for the distance.
  • 19 October, 3rd in National Closed Circuit Time-Trial Championships, 11.9 miles around Thruxton Motor Racing Circuit, only 5 seconds behind the champion.  Agegroup champion.
  • 21 December, won Farnborough and Camberley CC open 10 mile time-trial in 19:58, a new event record.

2013 Highlights (crash in early May and a delay in getting a new bike meant a very disrupted season):

  • Successful defence of BBAR (Best British Allrounder) national title.
  • 30 March, won CC Weymouth open 10 mile time-trial.
  • 26 May, won Hounslow & District Wheelers open 100 mile time-trial on a borrowed bike.
  • 28 July, won CC Breckland open 12 Hour time-trial, with 296.21 miles, longest 12 hour distance of the year for any rider.
  • 28 September, won Manchester Wheelers open 50 mile time-trial in a time of 1:39:50, which secured the BBAR title.

2012 Highlights:

  • 17 March, won Farnborough & Camberley open 10 mile time-trial in 19:54, 40 seconds ahead of second place.
  • 24 March, won Sotonia CC open 10 mile time-trial in 20:50, 25 seconds ahead of 2nd place and a new course record by 59 seconds.
  • 06 April, won High Wycombe CC open 10 mile time-trial in 19:38, 40 seconds ahead of 2nd place.
  • 07 April, won Oxford City Road Club open 10 mile time-trial in 19:39, 12 seconds ahead of Nic Hutchings.
